Relaxing – and helping nature – by tending moss in my garden

Moss growing on a rock

I’m someone who wants to help nature in whatever small way I can…

What do you do to protect and improve your mental wellbeing?

Tending moss! I’ve recently become fascinated by moss and have been enjoying learning about it and encouraging it in my garden!

It’s an amazing plant, so ancient (been around for over 450 million years) and so resilient. It can survive in hot and cold climates and temperatures from -15 to 40C; it dries out to protect itself but can spring back into life when rain returns, even after years and years of being in a dehydrated state.

It’s also great at soaking up carbon dioxide. Scientists reckon one square metre of moss can soak up more CO2 than a mature tree. Amazing stuff!

It’s also so easy to encourage it in the garden. I’ve been careful when weeding in spots where moss is already growing, pulling up roots gently so I don’t pull out the moss along with the roots of the weeds.

It’s amazing how well it spreads when there’s less competition. It’s really relaxing and quite a mindful process!
