My name is Toby Hay.
I have lived all of my life on the edge of the Cambrian Mountains, here in mid Wales.
I am a musician who is fascinated with the connection between landscape and music, and my own music is inspired by the landscapes here.
Improvisation is an important part of what I do, and bringing the guitar out into the landscape to create new music is always a rewarding experience.
I love how the sounds of the natural world bring out things in my own playing. I find myself responding musically to the space around me.
The birds always seem to sing that bit louder when I get the guitar out.
Mimicry is one way to conjure the landscape into the music. Copying the sounds of the birdsong, the sounds of running water, and of wind in the tress.
I like to use music as a way of connecting to the landscape around me.
I hope in these three videos, I capture a sense of that. And I hope I conjure some of the landscape, and most of all, I hope you enjoy them.
