Three short films by learning disabled and/or autistic creatives about who, what and where makes them happy.
On Happiness – by Bethany Freeman
In this film, West Wales actor, dancer and theatrical clown Bethany Freeman explores what happiness means to her, where she finds it, and how she brings happiness to others. This film was shot at Wiseman’s Bridge, where Bethany has often enjoyed family days out and which has real significance for her. It is also filmed at her friend and tutor Angharad James’s studio, where Bethany learns dance and grounded aerial work.
Heavy Metal is for Life – by Jacques Colgate
Jacques Colgate is an actor and musician based in Cardiff. A massive music fan, Jacques is a frequent Download Festival goer. But his film is as much about community – of the music scene, of the community garden he works at – and family as about music itself. This film was shot at Llandaff Fields, Nash Point and St Peter’s Community Gardens in Fairwater.
A Kooky Witchy Girl – by Lindsay Spellman
Originally from England, Lindsay Spellman has lived in Barry for well over a decade. She is a highly experienced actor and improviser who has toured the world with the Hijinx show Meet Fred. Her film is about finding happiness in creativity, in the natural world and in mysticism, and the importance of balance. It was shot in various locations around Barry.
The three film makers are all members of Hijinx’s Academies: ongoing professional performance training for adult actors with learning disabilities and/or autism. They were mentored through the process of making these films by Hijinx’s Head of Film, Dan McGowan.
