I’m a 40-year-old mum of a primary school child, and we live in a rural area.

Why is looking after your mental wellbeing important to you?

Because I’m a mum and I know when my wellbeing is good, I am a better mum. I’m more responsive to my child’s needs, and I’m better at managing my own emotions.

What do you do to protect and improve your mental wellbeing?

Lots of things! Getting outdoors in nature, noticing the little things that make me smile, like new flowers opening up, the sun poking out from behind the clouds, gazing at the moon and stars on a clear night. Star gazing and thinking about the vastness of space gives me such a sense of awe and wonder, the universe truly is awesome!

Being with my family and avoiding distractions (like my phone!) during those times so I get the most from it (I’m not great at this but I keep trying!). Gardening makes me feel good too.

Anything else you’d like to share?

My wellbeing is up and down. I try to talk to people close to me when I feel things affecting me negatively. Sometimes it’s hard to pin down what’s bothering me, but I find talking helps me to work through it.
